Kahuku Student becomes the first Miss Earth Hawaii

Spreading the word about a clean and green environment are newly crowned Miss Earth Hawaii Lucie Poehere Wilson (Kahuku High graduate) and Miss Earth USA Nicolle Velez.They both took top prizes at the Miss Earth Pageant last night by impressing the judges on their environmental platforms as well as competing in swimwear, evening gown and interview phases. Lucie won a $35,000 from Argosy University and was also the runner up in the 2013 Miss Earth USA pageant.

Lucie was able to spend 3 days with Coach Uila’s Environmental Resource Management class and with Coach Gordon to learn about sustainability issues, aquaponics and garden tours. She also accompanied a group of Kahuku  students visiting the Ho’okulea canoe to learn from the captain and scientists about the effect of pollution on phytoplankton in the ocean.
